Putting that one in the works now too.

Just to tear down a wall here on how the show works. We start discussing a topic like this, add to it and do it when we have all put in out 2 cents. At any time there might be a dozen such lists in the works. If we say "cool idea" and you don't hear it the next show that doesn't mean we are not loving it, there might just be 3 more that have been on the table for months.

Stuff that changed the landscape of the console

Third parties making games for systems (activision), Modules that allowed you to play other systems carts on your system (Exapansion Module 1 for colecovision that allowed you to play VCS carts on the colecovision), the Supercharger for the VCS, Voice module for Intellivsion etc etc.

Yeah, it took me quite some time to adapt to gamepads. I also struggled with the whole joystick/gamepad on the left rather than the right thing (which as I understand it was always a Japanese preference). Naturally, as with everyone else, I can freely go back and forth between everything now.

The Holy Crap thread got me thinking:

Top Ten Years For Arcade Games

I was thinking about the late 80s games I loved, and so many of them were '87: Afterburner, Xenophobe, Xybots, Shinobit, Sky Wolf. That's a great year.

SubaruBrat

They do tend to cluster, I have many games from 1982 for some reason.

miner2049er

I have a few Arcade Ambience tracks that play on my MAME frontend but the one I always use is 1981.

I would have to look at a list of games to pick a year though, just too much good stuff.

I have an idea, but it still needs to be fleshed out.

Top 10 Classic Videogame Films/TV shows/Publications.

or

Top 10 worst Classic Videogame Films/TV shows/Publications.

I don't think that you could do each form of media alone because most of them were crap. So, if you guys wanted to do "Top 10 videogame films" alone, maybe a "worst of" list would be better.

Coulda sworn I posted here already...anyhow here;s my ideas

Top ten gaming mascots: There's more than Sonic and Mario! To be honest, I always thought those two were over rated. My fave is Mega Man, with Samus Aran being a close second.

Top ten "new" retro consoles: New clones for our carts! I like the FC3+, but the controller has some design issues with the button layout. Yobo makes a ton of these clone systems, but there's others out there too, like the new Sega one with 20 built in games, a cart slot, and portable to boot!

Top ten games that "suck": Games that everyone says suck, but there's actually a fair bit of entertainment to be had from them.

Top ten controller innovations: What innovations in controller tech were the best? The D-Pad? Analog buttons? Analog sticks? Curves that go along with your hand? Rumble? Shoulder Buttons? Wireless? even the 4 port hubs?

Treasures of Tarmin and Utopia. They were incredibly far ahead of their time.

As for my suggestions:

Top Ten games based on a licence - It's bound to be a challenge to find them, but there have been a few good ones. Maybe not ten.

Top Ten Full Motion Video gam- oh, never mind. I actually quite enjoy FMV based games, but then I have very strange taste.

Top Ten Free, legal games - This is bound to have a strong bias to computer games. Ten games that were released originally as public domain or have been released into the public domain by the copyright holders.

Top Ten "Player 2" characters. We all know the main character from the game, but what about the one added for the second player? Many games put a new coat of paint on the Player 1 sprite and call it a day, but what about the ones with a character of their own? Surely I can't be the only one who would rather play as Luigi or Tails.

3) Top 10 Text Based Games (ie Zork series, Planetfall, Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, etc)

5) Top 10 Cool Characters (ie Sonic, Samus, Guybrush Threepwood, etc)

6) Top 10 Best Classic Consoles (ie Atari 2600, NES, Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES, Colecovision, etc)

Not sure what you would call this suggestion - but here goes.

Might help if you have kids by the way.

my 10 are..

hypersports - mame
sonic the hedgehog - megadrive
kaboom - 2600
day of the tentacle - pc
outrun - mame
bruce lee - c64
law of the west - c64
skooldaze - zx spectrum
advanced dungeons and dragons - intellivision
cannon fodder - amiga

The top 10 trackball games, a bit limited but it could be interesting.

The top 10 best underrated/unknown or obscure games

My last 2 are a bit better.

How about this: Top 10 Maze games. It could be Pac Man, it could be Wizard of Wor, it could be Fatal Labyrinth on the Genny (aka Nethack), it could be Deep Labyrinth on the DS. As long as the game plays entirely in a maze it would qualify (so no Bard's Tale or Final Fantasy where you go out to towns). I would like to add my vote for the Top 10 Most Significant Years in Gaming. Someone posted earlier about the years of Arcade Games, but I would like a more all encompassing Top 10 of all of the years for video games. It would be interesting to hear the arguments about why a particular year was great. Could be because of the release of certain titles or consoles, or by volume of games sold, or something that came out as a major breakthrough in games.

2. Had issues with PC and also getting onto site - now resolved - Thanks SoCal.

Here are my suggestions - and my seconding of others ideas:

2. Top 10 - 'Vector Games' - I second this - They pretty much all look so fresh even today....Star Wars, Tempest, Major Havoc.
3. Top 10 - 'Trackball Games' - Another seconded choice - Lurrrrve Marble Madness, Crystal Castles, et al
4. Top 10 - 'Text Based' - Seconded - Though where would the Level 9 games come - or Magnetic Scrolls? (Maybe best text-based with static graphics?).
5. Top 10 - 'Point N Click' - Seconded too - I need to revisit Scummvm sometime :)

Street Fighter needs to be in there. Just because of the asinine decision to cast Jean Claude as "all American Guile" and Raul Julia's final movie and performance as M. Bison. kthx

Top 10 Games responsible for breaking joysticks

This would be a fun one to listen to, I would put SummerGames/Winter Games down for this one.

I was thinking that maybe a top ten for
'Games people rave about but I just don't get, most over rated games' . Not sure if this topic would work as a top ten, but think it would be a fun topic to listen to if it contains games which the other hosts rate.
my list would have ELITE at the top, never ever enjoyed it, bored out of my mind playing it.

Hi everyone,
this is my first post so bear with me.

How about some top-10 lists by Generation. If we follow the Wikipedia 7 Generations list it would be like:

1. Pong machines (might want to skip that)
2. Proto 8bit (2600, Intellivision etc)
3. 8bit (NES, C64 etc)
4. 16bit (SNES, Amiga etc)
5. 32/64 bit (PS1, N64 etc)

after that it's definitely not retro (Dreamcast notwithstanding)

This can also mutate to a generational vs fight like, 2600 vs Intellivision, NES vs SMS, Amiga vs Atari ST, ZX vs C64.

Keep up the good work.

I'm new here and tried to read through the entire thread, but I might be suggesting things that have been suggested or even cover already, so apologize if that's the case. My picks:

Top ten best ports to a less powerful system - anything from Space Invaders Arcade to the 2600 version or the NES versions of arcade games like Sky Shark, or many Gameboy titles that were ported from the NES. There's many examples of games being just as good on lesser hardware.

I really like the idea of top ten best controllers so I'll second this if it hasn't already been done.

Best new retro games - games like Megaman 9 and 10 on the Wii, Cave Story for PC, VVVVVV for Mac/PC, Battle Kid for the NES, etc

Top ten arcade games that are awesome yet were not commercially successful.

We talk a fair amount about the Sega Master System doing just that, how they were very functional versions of games that had the power of the Genesis behind them. The limitations of the system were obvious compared to the Genesis but they still made a version that did not disappoint, very balanced in exploring the limits of the system without overreaching its abilities.

Are you serious? SNES Doom was a pretty inferior port by all accounts. Even the 32X version is better.

Are you serious? SNES Doom was a pretty inferior port by all accounts. Even the 32X version is better.

Ever heard of sarcasm? :P

And there is one thing that SNES Doom had over a lot (maybe all of them, I generally only play it on the PC) of it's cartridge console relatives (32X, Jaguar, etc etc) ... the music was flat out awesome. That and it IS a port of a game to a less powerful system. A full out 32 bit game going to an aging 16 bit console .... I don't know what the hell they were thinking. But man that music was wicked.

In my opinion the SNES version of Doom came out pretty good all things considered. The music is the obvious highlight of course, but it should also be noted that most of the game play elements and levels made it into the SNES version. The same cannot be said for some of the versions on more powerful systems. It's really the graphical presentation that lets the game down, though that's to be expected given the hardware limitations.

I actually think the top ten ports to a less powerful system is a really good suggestion. However, would that include NES ports of arcade titles like Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando that are pretty much entirely different games?

I actually think the top ten ports to a less powerful system is a really good suggestion. However, would that include NES ports of arcade titles like Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando that are pretty much entirely different games?Or Halo 2600... that's kind of a gray area, I'm not sure where the line is between "port" and "reinterpretation." All the early arcade->console games were reinterpretations - no code or artwork was actually ported, like, say a modern PS3->X360->PC game port. Yet, they're still ports to me. I think it depends on intent. If they were trying to capture the original then it's a port, regardless how it turns out (i.e. 2600 Pac Man or Donkey Kong). If they made a totally different game with the same character (NES Ninja Gaiden) it's not.

On this topic, there are a couple of 7800 games I like more than the arcade original. Galaga for one (blasphemy, I know). It has a much kinder difficulty ramp-up. I've never been a huge fan of Centipede, but the 7800 version has 2p co-op, which I think makes it a better game.

I've had an idea.

What about a top ten of 3D games released prior to 1996? With the rise of the Playstation, 3D cards on the PC and the N64, nearly everything moved to 3D. Before then it was a deliberate choice made by ambitious developers, mostly forcing 3D onto computers and consoles that were far better suited to 2D. I don't know if it is in the spirit of the top ten to assign a cutoff year for games, but I think this would be necessary in order to assure that it remains retro and to properly honour the effort that went into making those classic games.

While technically not a port in terms of using the same code, it was the common meaning of the word.

I've been listening to the December show and thinking about the theme of the distinctive qualities of Japanese games, which had me thinking about British games. British games are often quirky. Those of you who have played games from Automata, Delta 4, Llamasoft and others will know what I mean.

I see from the thread that a Top Ten British Games has been suggested before. Now I want to append that to be a Top Ten Quirky British Games. I think it would be quite entertaining and interesting to hear.

Hi there,

Not been on for a while.
1. I'm a bit behind - Just finished Ep.14......I'm making a concerted effort to catch up - Promise :)
2. Had issues with PC and also getting onto site - now resolved - Thanks SoCal.

Here are my suggestions - and my seconding of others ideas:
1. Top 10 - 'Prototypes' As per discussion of Arcade Classics cab in 'Anthologies' - Marble Man (Marble Madness 2 anyone.....Pssst.... (whisper) Anyone got a ROM? ;)

I thought I'd repost my original 2010 suggestions.
GREAT to see Text Games done :)
ALSO fantastic to see Driving Games on the way :D

But i still think the others above would be goodies too.

Keep up the great work -Andy

Interesting one :) there are lots of guys out there who own hydraulic cabs and such so there is a lot of interest, although i personally have felt little benefit from looking a prat on a hydraulic moving machine and when Space Harrier,Afterburner,Hang-on and Outrun appeared that pretty much was the beginning of the end for arcades in my opinion because of the price to purchase and maintain them. Star Rider (Midway-disc) was the best game that i sat on as it was non-moving and the best u/r would be Battlezone with the viewer.

I was thinking that a top 10 most memorable level/stage in any retro game. It came to me when i was re playing Sonic 2 on my Megadrive and i thought just how amazed i was to see the Chemecal Plant and how cool it was to play that level. it is so fast and well animated, the enemy hardly stop you from shooting through the levels. so for me that would be one hell of a memorable level for overall gameplay and style.

Top 10 lesser known puzzle games. My vote would be for (7Up) Spot on the NES.

My vote would go on two games i vividly remember watching during my childhood on the Amiga 1200 they are

(Commador Amiga)

Spherical - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8l7ylpN5Ro
A fantastic puzzle game in which you are a wizard who has to release a ball into the IN box on every level. you can play this for years it really seems timeless, in fact i would be interested to know if UK Mike has played this title.

(Commador Amiga)

Mean Arenas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBYKR_xFODU

This puzzle game should be on XBLA and PSN for sure, its a brilliant puzzle game with two funny hosts that introduce the enemies prior you being dropped into the arena. also you will note the amazing soundtrack that many amiga games had this is no exception.

Good selections Vipp. I hadn't heard of Spherical or Mean Arenas.

Another nomination to the "Top 10 Lesser Known Puzzle Games" list would be Kwirk (Game Boy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFAe379Oi08.

It is one of those games where you have to reach a goal by pushing obstacles that are in your way. Some blocks can fill holes in the ground. Others can act as revolving doors. Since you can only push items and not pull them back, you can make mistakes that will force you to restart the level.

Not sure if this was the first puzzle game of this style or if this is a clone of another game, but it is the first one I remember seeing. And maybe it is well known, just not talked about much.
