Spartan X... TREME!
heh, I've seen this plenty of times and I love it.
My first thought was I do not remember Kung Fu Master playing this fast, nor controlling that well. I always remembered horridly slow play and bad collision detection... Awesome video though. Anyone want to start naming all the game references?

Hrmm ... I used to play the hell out of it. Still do from time to time. Never had an issue with the control or the speed of it. But maybe that's just me. :)

I forgot to mention, the bit at the end with the dude. That's Game Center CX, the best Japanese TV show ever...

I looked up Kung Fu Master on youtube, and watched both arcade and NES play. I know I played the arcade version, and I hated the NES version. I will admit it I was a arcade snob and NES ports never lived up to my standards, ohhh wait one kind of did, for some reason I LOVED Donkey Kong 3 and the NES version was accurate. Anyhow after watching the guy play all the way through NES KFM I was shocked I honestly don't remember it playing that nice.

Yeah, mine was a little different in the fact that in MY Atari 2600/NES days, I never played arcades. Ever. Just never got the chance to, or didn't care enough, or SOMETHING. So I didn't play the arcade version of KFM until YEEEEARS later when I got into emulation (96, 97ish). I guess that's how come I personally think that games that other people hate the ports to I like. Like the Defender, Mario Bros and Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600. I had NEVER played them in the arcade back when I was playing those home ports in 86ish, so I wasn't quite as "jaded". The same thing with KFM for the NES, that's all I ever knew.
Granted, having played the arcade versions of those example games, yeah, I can definitely see where they would be utterly fucking terrible ports. And I could definitely see myself being really disappointed with them when I was a kid had I played the arcade versions. But in hindsight I'm kinda glad I wasn't disappointed. :) I just had fun with them, and the floating eggs in Joust on the 2600 are a trip and definitely add to the game in my opinion. :)
I didn't really start playing arcades until TMNT and The Simpsons. I think those were the first arcade machines I ever touched. Didn't get heavy into arcades until the original Mortal Kombat hit.

I didn't even know that there was an arcade version of KFM, lol. Just tried the NES
version out some time ago and instantly loved it. Imho it's very playable, at least
as long you don't compare it to anything else.
I think I just got really lucky, my hometown the bowling alley always had 6 to 10 cabs and a few pins, the pizza place usually had 3 to 5 cabs. The Safeway had 2 cabs until about '90. And there was an arcade that came and went with various owners, then in '91 or '92 a really nice arcade opened and I think it closed in '95 or '96. Then in the big city 10 miles away both malls had arcades, one had a small Tilt, and the other had a huge locally owned arcade from the early 80's till at least '93 or '94 maybe later?(I moved away in early '95). Also several of the pizza places here had large 10+ cab arcades and a few still do. Of course the Chuck E Cheese opened in '82 or '83 and is still there. Though it is tiny compared to when it originally opened, I think I can count on one hand the number of times I have went. Wait there was a period after it downsized I had a friend work there so I got free tokens, as I recall I used the tokens more to wash my car at the car wash... And I saved the best for last around '87 or '88 a nickel arcade opened and has continued to operate and I still go about once a month. Granted it is dominated by redemption machines and gimick cabs(sit down driving, shooting games) they still have a few good cabs. For a period in the late 90's early '00 they had a section of "free play" retro cabs which is where I spent most of my time. Sprinkle in a few trips to Disneyland over the years and a couple of trips to GameWorks in Seattle and anytime I go to Vegas I still hunt out the arcade. My point is I have been blessed or gotten lucky to have played a ton of retro cabs or at least seen them. So to me a port is rarely playable, I need true emulation to get my fix. Dhalamar I get your postion, it is the common way the NES generation got into gaming. It is one of the reasons I got into this podcast, I am still a gamer I own all the systems, so I listen to the current podcasts to get reviews of the current games. I get tired of hearing about how great and awesome Ninja Gaiden, or Bionic Commando was for the NES, these two games were my favourite in the arcade, but totally different stories on the NES. The podcasters only knew the NES and have no respect for the arcade from which these games came. I was ready at one point to cancel my EGM because of this. I guess I am a purist. Site the source and respect it...
Ok sorry I will get off my soapbox now, I hope this made some sort of sense. I kind of rambled a bit. I've tried to clean it up. It has been smoldering inside for a while and I guess I needed to vent...
