I'm trying to remember this obscure add-on that was released in the UK for the SNES that aloud you to upload high score through a one-way modem that you attach to a handset, dial out a phone number, and post your score onto a teletext page for those to see.
All I can remember was seeing this advert in Nintendo Magazine system that had a picture of a wizard of something summoning a cartridge that looks like a game genie or an action replay that had the modem on it.
What the hell is it called!?!
I've been hunting the internet for it, and instead found even more obscure Nintendo products, such as a Super Famicom modem made to make horse bets with a proprietary internet system, and you get a controller with a crazy number pad on it.
If anyone can help, much would be appreciated.

Was it the X-Band?

No it's not the XBAND. I know what that is and it allows you to play games online with people. But this wasn't for online play, it was made to upload highscores to a leaderboard on teletext.

OK. I dug around a little bit and checked my Nintendo Powers from the 16 bit era but haven't come up with anything. I haven't had a chance to check my old EGM or GamePros from that era, but I'll look after work.

Problem is, I don't think it came out outside the UK since it worked on a system called Teletext, think of the internet, but really old school as if you're surfing the net on a 2600, but on your TV. As far as I know Teletext was only really available in the UK.

(edit: apparently a version of teletext was in the states called Telidon)
it looked like this...

There was a cable that came out of the cart with a speaker on the end that you place on the microphone of a phone. You would dial a number, and then upload your highscore through the modem.

I've heard of Teletext, but I'm sure the US version didn't get anywhere near catching on as well as in the UK. The peripheral described sounds like a neat addition to a UK collection. It does sound like a lot of extra hardware for just posting high scores, though.

Not to mention the huge phone bill you'll make, lol.

Yeah... it was much later then that. It was about at least 8 magazines or so before NMS became NOM on the release of the N64.
