View Full Version : POLL: Sniping Protection on the Chuckwagon

I have the option to add "Sniping Protection" on the Chuckwagon. If we chose to do this, our system would simply add one more minute after each last second bid and remain doing that until the bidding stops.
I have been told by some that sniping was one of the reasons that Ebay has had problems. I realize this would be good for the sellers but maybe not so good for the buyers.
What are your thoughts?

I will admit to bidding on an auction in the last few seconds sometime to avoid a noob bidding war, sometimes due to limited amounts of funds, and others because I couldn'y make up my mind, and even other times because it's fun. ;)

I'm not sure it would be all that good for sellers or buyers to do away with sniping.
As a seller, I don't care whether the bid is made 1 second after the item is listed or 1 second before it ends. I don't want anything that discourages buyers from bidding at any time. I know that as a seller, I much prefer a set ending time for the auction. It makes it so much easier to manage invoicing, communication, packing, and shipping.
As a buyer, I often wait till later in the auction to avoid the 'nibbling' syndrome. Just because I'm willing to pay $20 for something doesn't mean I wouldn't be happier to get it for 15. If I place the $20 proxy early, it gives more time for others to nibble away and drive it higher. If I place it late, then there is a slightly better chance that I'll get it below my maximum.
I think I would support something that prevents sniping programs, though. If you want to use a sniping strategy, then I think it would be good to have to manually place the bid.
Here's a nickel, I'll wait for my 3 cents change.

Ignore one of the yes votes as I voted before I read it completely. I thought it was a way to block 3rd party sniping. I don't care so much for 3rd party sniping but am all for last minute bids. I also am not a big supporter of dynamic auctions like this that extend end time. :)

 how did i miss this thread!
i voted Yes, maybe right now it won't mean anything, (more bids) but as CTCW site get bigger and bigger this will give more of a chance to get more last minute bids. which means more $ for everyone, including mike. :)
i don't agree that having this in place will keep people from bidding, some may say they won't bid on these type of auctions, but if they want it and the price is right, they'll bid! i know I WILL!! :p

It'll be interesting to see how the poll goes as more respond. Pretty close right now (with Bruce taking back his 'yes').
Here's another thought....
Would it be possible to make this a selling option so the seller could choose firm ending time or dynamic? Maybe this could even be a default setting that the seller could pick once and then just override it if there was one auction that they wanted to do differently than their default.

I will have to look into making this an option. I know right now I simply can choose a standard ending or dynamic ending in my admin package. I see it as kind of a 50/50 thing myself. That is why I posed the question

I had to vote NO. As much as I would like to vote yes, I can't do that because I know that the outcome could result in many Non-Payers. I think it would be good as an option for listing items like (oldgames) suggested, but maybe not for everyone's items. High bid should win at said ending time, this is my 2 cents.

I didn't even think about it but I prefer a firm ending time especially when I have a child to take care of. While it may not extend that end time over much or even if there would be any last minute bids, I like knowing when the auction ends and being able to be there for it myself. :)

Mark another down for the 'selectable option' category. If it was something low dollar that I was selling, I would just go with the fixed ending auction and not think about it. If it were something a bit more in demand (IE: popular RPGs / multicarts / etc) the dynamic bidding would be to the seller's advantage.) Of course you have the risk of overuse/abuse. It would depend on the seller's good judgement to opt to turn such a feature on. As things start to drift into the mainstream and a few LCD(the math term) folks wander in I don't know if they could use that new power wisely. So, I'm voting no for now.
Hex.

DOH!! well that sucks! hopefully you can get it down the road as an option. like i said, i don't think it will be a HUGE factor "right now" but as CTCW grows, i would love to have this as an option. :)
