I read it, and still don't get it, perhaps you just have to see it.

The "Adult" and "mature" references are due to the dark story mainly...not nudity or sex or anything.
Its sort of 2 games in 1. Its a sort of puzzle game/relationship simulator mash-up.
I played through it and while I was impressed with the characters and the story...the puzzle game feels like something that should be in the XBox live arcade...not a $60 release.
The Q-Bert references are valid...the puzzle game part does have the same feel as Q-bert.
Its basically a continuation of the Persona series...if that helps. Much like a spiritual successor.
Not really my cup of tea...but its a good game.

There's a few references to retro gaming. One is an arcade game inside the bar that's essentially an 8-bit version of the puzzles you go through in the nightmares. Another comes from one of the guys who frequents the bar and is seen in the nightmares. His name is Justin Bailey.

There is a quote from Simon's Quest later on too. "What a horrible night for a Curse."

Actually I was wrong. In Catherine the boss says, "It's a fine night for a curse." Still probably the reference they were going for.
