Ok so I was screwing around with about 5 different versions of MAME running inside of Win98 because I couldn't get the dos sound to work. I was only able to get one version to run smooth but the joystick in put would lock up randomly... go figure.

So I did a fresh install of XPSP3 and it actually runs much better! I consistantly get 60FPS I am running Mame32 .66b the windows GUI one and it runs better than any version did on win98! It runs perfectly with no lag and no joystick problems. I am going to try a newer version that supports more game to see if it will run it smoothly or not.

Miner, Don't bother digging for the .66 DOS version just for me becuase I can't use it but it seems like I don't need it.

    No problem.

Whatever you decide to run on it, more RAM would make it run better.

Thanks UK. I might up the ram if i can find some cheap but it takes pc133 sodimms with a max of 1 gig. Im guessing it has 2 128 meg chips and it looks like the 512mb ones getting harder to find and run about 50 bucks a pop. It's it's running very well for only 256mb!

Just a warning that a lot of PCs from that era won't support an individual 512mb stick. You may be limited to using 2x 256. You'd have to check your motherboard specs to be sure.

Yes, this board does support 512 chips but i don't think it's that cut and dry. I know that back in the day with desktops some only supported low density 512 meg memory chips (not positive on laptops yet)

yes, there are variations - you might have to update the bios on the thing to get it to read higher speeds etc. Still should be easy to find at an auction site.

I might have some that would do it. I have a ton of old laptop RAM.
